“So what're your New Year resolutions?” “I don't believe in making them. New Year resolutions are self destructive, undermining of our self-confidence and individuality. I believe in making and meeting achievable goals throughout the year, not just on January 1st.” “You've already broken yours haven't you?!” I've been trying to think of why we break our New Year's resolutions, and a way around the problem. I've deduced that one of the reasons we break our resolutions is because they create a paradox. For example you might have on your list that you will eat less, be healthier and give up alcohol. But also on your list is that you vow to be happier! Hence the stalemate. The solution lies in the resolutions we make. They should be practical, achievable and above all… fun! Here are a few to consider to replace the ones you've already broken: I will think of another password other than 'password', '1234' or 'hello'. I resolve to work with neglected children – my own. I will dance more. Go and see live comedy more often. Buy myself flowers regularly. Get better at cooking. Dress better for work, school or uni. I will check one big thing off my bucket list. (There is a reason they are on your bucket list – right?) Whatever your resolutions this year make sure they include all of the things that make you smile more and keep you happy and healthy. So it's farewell from me now. Thanks for having me and all the best for the future.

es, it's more than thirty years since Mark Prosser left St Andrews College and gained his qualification as a builder in Christchurch. As he finished his apprenticeship, he found himself out of work when his employer moved to Australia. Through a family connection Mark gained his first project and has never looked back. Slowly he gained momentum, gaining trust and relationships with many clients who, over the years, referred him on to other people. Since 1992, when he became a Master Builder, the company, as it is now known, has displayed that same tenacity that has led to winning numerous national and regional awards for its high quality construction of architecturally designed homes. Mark's head foreman Matt will celebrate 10 years this month with the company.

W

hen Kris Jones received his Eke Panuku supreme award to recognise Māori and Pasifika achievement at CPIT recently he wore the cloak his mother made for him. The cloak is a symbol of their inter-twined journey; Jones' reconnection with his Māori heritage, and his Pakeha mum Tracey-Anne Cook's support of her son's cultural studies by learning traditional Māori weaving. Kris is a CPIT Bachelor of Māori language and Indigenous Studies student. He received not only the prestigious Monte Ohia award but is also the institute's overall supreme Māori student achiever. He was nominated by the CPIT's Humanities Department for demonstrating both community involvement within Christchurch and sound academic progress in the first year of his bachelor course…

Q & Kris JONES A Eke Panuku winner, Bachelor of Māori language and Indigenous Studies first year student Kris Jones, with his mother Tracey-Anne Cook.

12 January 28, 2016 Metropol

Your Māori heritage comes from your father's side but you were brought up by your mother without any involvement in Māori culture, when did you become interested in your Māori heritage? Maoridom was around me when I would hang with my aunties, my father's sisters, but I never really connected to it. It wasn't until I was taken to a ahikaaroa practice for a performance at Christmas in the park in 2009. Where did your involvement with Kapa Haka take you at the time? At that time is was a focus for me, so mentally it took me further than any extrinsic thing. But we did perform at Christmas in the Park that year which was pretty cool. Is Kapa Haka physically demanding? Yes. Because you are singing, moving and managing to breathe at the same time. When you're putting all your energy into the performance to give it that further x-factor it truly leaves you drained and tired. What is your favourite aspect of Kapa Haka? The whanangatanga. Just the aspect of being close to like-minded individuals with their own personalities and fun.

He Kura e Huna Ana, Kris Jones (left) Which are the performance highlights of your Kapa Haka experience? Going to Greece was definitely a highlight, also this year I stood at Te Matatini, and that was next level special because it was here in Christchurch, at home. What advice would you give to young people with Māori heritage who are currently struggling at school? If you're struggling, focus on what you enjoy, what you want to learn to grow, if school can't shape you... I'm not saying just leave school, but there are places you can go to specialise in what you're passionate about. You've just got to have the motivation to work hard on what you really decide on. When did you become interested in Te Reo studies? Haha, don't get me wrong I don't enjoy studying Te Reo, though the environment at CPIT is really great, I just hate that I can't speak or understand the language that defines my culture. I hate how if someone speaks to me in Te Reo, I can't reply or understand. I hate how I am so lacking in knowledge.

What is the community initiative Tu Toka Tu Ariki Wānanga Taiaha and how did you become involved? Tu Toka Tu Ariki Wānanga Taiaha is a wairua based kaupapa that empowers Māori men to prolong life in the form of traditional practices, 7-8 times a year we hold camps to teach mau rakau (taiaha forms and movements), haka, waiata, under the korowai (cloak) of au kāti. Au kāti is alcohol free, drug free, violence free. I first joined the wananga in 2009 and have since become a top warrior earning myself a taiaha which I have named after my late grandfather, Tutatunui Te Aohia Jones. I have become a tutor of the second rank, Amokapua and watched the growth of many boys/men who have stood beside me in the ranks of blood and sweat shared, and those that were under my own tutelage. You inspired your mother to become involved in learning about Māori culture what has she been learning? When I started getting deeper into my culture my mom joined a basic Te Reo course on Monday nights and it was stuff I was also learning at the time so we would often bounce off each other saying lines and structures. Following her foundations

Mom has learnt how to weave flax. Going from flowers to four corner kono, (basket type thing) to peke (bags). This year Mom spent months creating a korowai (cloak) that embodies our journey, the studies. In just a few years you have made a huge turn around and are now interested in becoming a teacher or coach, what is your advice to pupils as far as education goes? Find what you're passionate about, you'll find your motivation to learn exceeds the pain it is to study. What is your favourite item of clothing? I don't really feel attachment to clothing... My greatest moments in life are when I'm mostly naked, in a grass skirt and such. What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I'm actually really white... Recently I got a tan though so I'm crazy happy! What's next on the wish list? Finish my degree and get a job, or get a job and finish my degree. I want money, money is nice, but I won't sacrifice it for my studies and cultural activities. I'm not that desperate... Yet! Money is kind of important, but luckily Mom has supported me and I've got a student allowance.

Catching up with Cathedral Junction By Hans Petrovic

With many people walking by and speaking in other languages while we were enjoying a Saturday-evening meal outside the Japanese restaurant in Cathedral Junction, we had the distinct feeling that we must be in some European country.

I

t was only a few days before that I had learned that the original owner of the Cookai Restaurant, which used to be in Cashel Street before the earthquakes, had reopened at Cathedral Junction under the name Sakimoto Japanese Bistro, and was serving very similar food there. My partner, Pat, and I had made no plans to dine at the Sakimoto that night and had not booked ahead, so it came as no surprise that the restaurant was full up inside and that we would have to use a table outside. Of course, Cathedral Junction is very well sheltered, with a curved, transparent roof high above and virtually no wind blowing through the tramway arcade connecting Worcester Street to Gloucester Street, making it a pleasant setting for out-of-restaurant eating. When one of the tram restaurants trundled by, we found it to be surprisingly quiet and that it added to the European atmosphere. It then occurred to us that most of those overseas people we were seeing were most probably staying at the three hotels surrounding the junction – the Rendezvous Hotel to the left side of the Gloucester Street entrance of the junction, and the Hotel 115 and the Quest on either side of the Worcester Street entrance. They could well be on their way to a meal or passing on to New Regent Street, which is directly opposite on the 14 January 28, 2016 Metropol

When one of the tram restaurants trundled by, we found it to be surprisingly quiet and that it added to the European atmosphere. Gloucester Street side. We also learned that the original concept for the atrium complex was provided by Christchurch's legendary designer John Britten but, before his ideas could be fully realised, he died in 1995. Despite this, and because we had not prepared for the evening, Pat did feel a little bit cold, which was easily fixed by her going to the Forget Me Not New Zealand gift shop, which was right next door to the Sakimoto, and buying a scarf there for $10. All told, it turned out to be an inexpensive evening, with the excellent food and tea costing us a total of $39. The property manager of the junction, Leonie Queree, of Cathjun Limited, says

that with more and more people coming to that part of town, attracted by the Isaac Theatre Royal, New Regent Street and nearby bars and restaurants, as well as residents at the hotels, most of the stores in Cathedral Junction were doing really well. Three of the pre-earthquake tenants – the Seasons Espresso and Lunch Bar, the Swiss Bistro and Welcome Aboard, the booking office for tours all over town – are still there and picking up in business. Leonie also points out that the junction is the No. 1 boarding stop in the city for all trams, with people continuously getting on and off there. Entering from Worcester Street on the left, one passes between Chong's Chinese Restaurant and the Seasons Espresso Bar, and then it's on past the Cathedral Junction Barbers, NUZTRI New Zealand Quality Nutrition, the Swiss Bistro and the tour booking station. At the Gloucester Street entrance you first see the Rendezvous Hotel and then pass the Junction Convenience Store; the wonderful Imagination Station, where children and adults learn to play with Lego; The Wine Spot, which also sells craft beer and spirits; the Blue Penguin Boutique; Fantail Gifts; Forget Me Not; International Development Ltd, which helps overseas visitors with currency exchange, travel insurance and translation; and the Sakimoto Japanese Restaurant.

While these longer lengths can take a while to adjust to, that swishing feel of fabric and the graceful style of a longer length skirt adds elegance that skims the female form in flattering flair. From simple sheath dresses to flamboyant cocktail attire, fashion's focus is all about length.

like a challenge,” says Sophie, a senior qualified hairdresser and barber with 10 years of experience in the industry. Sophie is equally at home with colouring as she is cutting, with the lob, a collar length bob, one of the cuts of the season. In sleek styles or a beachy look, with or without a fringe, it is a cut that Sophie says suits every face shape. Colour is Tash's speciality, particularly balayage and new colour trend, tortoiseshell. “Balayage and ombre have long been the hottest hair looks but this summer it's all about the tortoiseshell hair!” says Tash, with the beautifully blended look achieved by using golden, caramel, chestnut and chocolate tones. “If you are looking for a new look for the New Year I would love to help you achieve this.” Misty is loving the challenge of her new work environment, and offers the latest trends in hair ups to their clients. For the summer season she says this has been all about braids - worn up or in low ponytails, braids can be mixed with an unstructured beach look and easily adapted to each client's hair length. Kiwis cycling

More than one million New Zealanders regularly get on their bikes, and that number is growing.

T

he NZ Transport Agency has a target of 10 million more cycling trips annually by 2019, and national cycling manager Dougal List says he's heartened by reaching the million milestone. “It's fantastic that more than a quarter of our population are getting out on their bike – and the research shows that a further 407,000 are intending to take up cycling in the next six months so we're on track for 10 million journeys annually by 2019 – if not sooner.” The Transport Agency launched its annual Bike Wise programme this month, which Dougal hopes will encourage even more Kiwis to take up New Zealand's fastest growing method of transport.

The annual summer celebration includes Bike Wise Month in February 2016. “There are plenty of activities taking place up and down the country during the Bike Wise programme which provides some great opportunities for people to get involved. “More Kiwis cycling to work, to keep fit or simply for fun is positive for both the individuals and for our transport networks.” There is a full calendar of cycling events across New Zealand, including Big Bike Tune Ups, where mechanics conduct free maintenance checks to ensure bikes are safe, road-worthy and a good fit for the cyclist, and events aimed at building new riders' confidence. The calendar of events can be found at www.bikewise.co.nz/events.

ictoria Pomeroy, co-owner of Flow Hot Yoga, along with Greta Wilkinson and Jessica Smith, says one of the lesser known benefits of yoga is its ability to fight stress. “Practising yoga reduces our perception of stress, which changes how our bodies respond. There's also evidence that it can help anxiety and depression too.” As well as an effective stress-buster, yoga also promotes relaxation. A relaxed mind and body means better sleep and good sleep is important for all aspects of a healthy life. “Yoga helps you to fall asleep sooner and improves sleep quality, so much so that some people actually need less sleep if they hit the mat regularly.” Then there are the tangible benefits like

soothing physical ailments, easing pain and core strengthening. Yoga is also good for breathing, emotional stability, weight control, releasing tension and boosting immunity. And there's one more reason to roll out the mat: Flow Hot Yoga in Riccarton. With a focus on balance, energy, harmony and strength, Flow Hot Yoga offers classes for all levels. Classes are heated to various temperatures using a sophisticated heating system that provides a clean, healthy environment to maximise therapeutic benefits. With 16 teachers and 52 classes a week, Flow Hot Yoga has a class to suit every level. Until 29 February, annual memberships are just $1,099 for unlimited yoga. Visit www.flowhotyoga.co.nz.

Amazing adventures at sea For local and international visitors alike, Banks Peninsula has much to offer: amazing wildlife, the world’s rarest dolphins, wide views of giant volcanic cliffs, undiscovered beaches, as well as the Akaroa township to enjoy and explore.

B

lack Cat Cruises offer visitors a plethora of activities: swimming with dolphins, harbour cruises, trips to Quail Island, Diamond Harbour and Lyttelton, even private charters. This year marks the company's 30th year of operation, quite an achievement considering it was set up with one exfishing boat, which carried eight passengers. Today there are seven vessels, carrying up to 99 passengers. Facilities include hot water to warm swimmers up and tea and coffee facilities. The visitor numbers are up to 3.5 million passengers annually and Black Cat Cruises are putting on an extra boat this summer to cope with the demand. “Canterbury, particularly in terms of international visitors, will probably have a record number this year,” says Tim Hunter,

chief executive of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism (CCT). Visitors get to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience, view the world's smallest and rarest dolphins and their calves, seal pups, and all in a unique volcanic crater. “There are plenty of opportunities for locals to experience their own back yard, we offer a trip to Quail Island for family picnics and cater for private functions: birthdays, 21sts, and Christmas functions. We are flexible and can take guests to find a sheltered bay to enjoy their event,” adds Paul Milligan, Chief Executive Black Cat Cruises. T

he Antigua Boat Sheds have been part of Christchurch's history for over 130 years. They were erected in 1882 for the express purpose of providing recreational facilities for the citizens of Christchurch. The Boat Sheds are still home to that traditional and iconic pastime – boating – but they are also home to an excellent cafe and catering service. The Boat Shed Café offers an extensive range of menus to suit all tastes and occasions. Why not try their delicious and filling breakfast classics like French toast and pancake stacks, or some of their

lighter breakfast fare? The lunch menu offers a tasty café-style take on a great range of Kiwi favourites, such as toasted sandwiches and fish and chips, in addition to more sophisticated dishes such as warm teriyaki chicken and orange salad. There is

a wide selection of slices and cakes in the cabinet too, for that sweet morsel to complete a meal. A children's menu and a gluten-free menu are available as well, or you could even try one of the Boat Shed Cafe's famous picnic hampers on the river bank. Planning a party or function? The cafe can host groups of up to 60. Enjoy a gourmet BBQ on the deck with your work or social group, or opt for the cocktail catering menu. Savoury tart flavour hit New Zealand food writer, Emma Galloway learned to love fresh, healthy and delicious food growing up in a creative whole-food-loving family. Her passion shines through in the delectable recipes and photographs in her debut cookbook, My Darling Lemon Thyme: Recipes from my real food kitchen as does her philosophy that natural, whole food should be avoursome, fun and easy to prepare.

harissa pumpkin & feta tart Ingredients: Approx. 1kg crown, Queensland blue or butternut pumpkin, peeled and chopped into 2-3cm chunks 1/2 C harissa plus extra to serve 1 quantity of savoury pastry (make your own or buy readymade) 80-100g feta cheese, crumbled 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tsp rice milk or almond milk Coriander leaves to serve Method: Preheat oven to 180C and lightly grease an oven tray. Combine pumpkin and harissa in a large bowl, mixing to thoroughly coat. Turn out onto oven tray and roast for 30-35 minutes, turning a few times during cooking, until tender and golden. Set aside to cool completely. Roll out pastry on a lightly rice- oured surface or between two sheets of baking paper to roughly 30cm round and 3mm thick. Place on a baking tray and top with the roasted pumpkin, leaving a 6cm border. Crumble feta over the top, then fold edge of the pastry to make a raised crust. Brush pastry crust with egg wash and bake for 40-45 minutes until pastry is crisp and golden. Serve hot or at room temperature, scattered with chopped coriander leaves and with extra harissa on the side.

It permeates Italian culture from its rustic Italian ambient interior to its menu of the authentic Italian foods we love so much. H

agley Golf Club, established in 1904, has been a haven for golf lovers and it's an opportunity, if you haven't tried golf, for Cantabrians to access the sport easily.

Welcoming new players, I played my first round of golf here, and for the casual player it has easy access with loads of parking in north Hagley Park. It's accessible by car from Armagh Street and Riccarton Ave – a relaxing round is practically in your back yard. It's a beautiful place to play golf and the team at Hagley Golf are enthusiastic about you having a wonderful experience and the Clubhouse caters for some great food after your game or if you just want to drop in on your walk through North Hagley

Park. A licenced café with short order and cabinet food there's pretty much everything for the hungry golfer or casual strolling Cantabrian. With the rustic cool atmosphere of an old golf club, it's a great place to visit or hang out for a beverage post-game. I noticed a team building event happening on course while I was there and the Clubhouse is available for that special function just for you. Think birthdays, engagements, weddings… Catering is also available. Go to www.hagleygc.org.nz for more information or give them a call. The office number is (03) 379 8279 to book your round and if you want to enquire about holding a function call the Clubhouse on (03) 365 3010, Open 9am4pm Tuesday to Sunday…. FORE!

Their collections represent a richness forgotten in more modern furniture styles. Launched late last year, and available in New Zealand for the first time, their collections are created by one of the most famous and respected furniture manufacturers in China. Crafted from solid mahogany, their

Small building company = personal service “If you are looking for personal service and individual attention when you are building your new home,” says Sam Fleetwood of Fleetwood Construction, “think about working with a small building company, not a big housing company. There are lots of advantages in doing this.”

am speaks from his years of experience in the building industry and from his dedication to quality and perfection. Indeed choosing the right builder can mean the difference between having a house that doesn't quite “fit” and having a home where you feel you and your family truly belong. Getting that right “fit” may mean customising a design with the features that matter most to you. “As a small building company we are able to work with clients individually to make sure they get the custom options they really want at a price that works for their budget. We're not about rapid building; we're about getting it right the first time and focusing on each client's unique needs.” Sam also says that small building companies tend to work where they live and that means they have a great deal riding on their reputation. they have a personal stake in making a neighbourhood more attractive and valuable, so they're more likely to make sure the houses they build are stylish and timeless. “As a small building company we also depend a great deal on referrals and word-of-mouth for future business. omprising round and oval cocottes in five sizes and a teapot/kettle with tea infuser the range features an ultramarine blue enamel exterior and matte black interior. Designed to be a lifetime utensil the cocottes' deep blue glazed enamel won't chip, scratch, rust or stain. The matte black enamel on the inside is particularly ingenious as, with use, it becomes a natural non- stick surface that just keeps on improving with use. The stand-out advantage of the Staub cocottes is their cooking ability – the cast iron retains and distributes heat evenly and effectively while the well-fitting lids feature basting spikes on their interior that funnel the evaporated liquid back into the food. The results are perfectly cooked dishes that have retained their natural juices and moisture – and are full of flavour. And their overall good looks mean they should be used from oven or cooktop direct to the table – their heat retention properties mean they will keep food warmer for longer. The smooth flat under-surface of each piece means it can be used on all types of cooktop, including induction. Staub cocottes do not require seasoning – they are ready for immediate use. The Staub Marin Blue collection of cocottes and tea pot is available nationally from leading independent kitchenware retailers.

STREET APPEAL Cymon Allfrey

Street art could be described as an art movement in its infancy but what is most exciting is that Christchurch is becoming its international centre. Architect Cymon Allfrey explains…

T

hroughout the rebuild, and particularly in the last eighteen months as the soul of the city returns, we have talked about how our city can make its mark. How we can be special, and stand apart from others. Street-art is one of those ways. For George Shaw his obsession with street-art began with the simple act of buying a t-shirt and has grown beyond comprehension. British born, he settled in Christchurch pre-earthquakes and has openly shared his love and passion for street-art with us all. While you may not know the name, the post-quake environment means you will most definitely know, and have experienced, the

work that comprises his Christchurch Oi YOU! collection. Having become a champion for an artistic movement – as under appreciated today as pop music was in the 1960s – Shaw has achieved a balance between an idea and an obsession and ultimately constructed his life and a living, out of it. Oi YOU! has curated over twenty-five completed installations around the city, with more taking shape this summer. For some, the appeal of street art may be hard to grasp, with many of the graffiti based works often perceived as vandalism. However, like all art, design and architecture where one piece polarizes your taste, another will have you coming

back for more. Having recently attended the annual SPECTRUM Street Art Festival (12 December 2015 – 17 April 2016, YMCA, 12 Hereford Street) and previously having heard Shaw speak I was surprised to discover that we have more street art installations than Melbourne. As a city, we have found ourselves at the centre of the street art movement. We have seen, and experienced, the transition of this art form from tagging into something special and collectable. It is inspiring and refreshing to meet someone who wants to make Christchurch special, and not just through the rebuild of buildings and homes, but through a

HOME creative outlet. Through partnership with the YMCA Shaw has opened a facility in which to exhibit street-art. This year's SPECTRUM Street Art Festival sees eight artists from France, Holland, Spain, Australia, Invercargill, Auckland and Christchurch create large scale pieces across the city. While smaller examples of their work, coupled with work by several returning artists, are on show at the YMCA building. It is an amazing festival in which both the scale and technique employed to create, are available to be witnessed and

experienced up close, providing greater depth and understanding to the stories behind the pieces and the artists. As an architect this artistic display gives me another view on the possibilities that exist when it comes to the side, back and even structural walls. Where once material ďŹ nishes were engaged to provide texture and interest to these vast spaces, we now have the opportunity to have it embraced as a canvas for artwork. No longer are these walls that face the wrong way, but a space in which architecture can have an identity. One that traditionally can't be achieved through geometry, texture and light – we all know where the Elephants are on Manchester Street and the Ballerina in the central city, but how many of us know the buildings on which they are found? There is some debate about the longevity of such pieces. As the rebuild progresses and they become obscured from view some may argue that the point of the art was short-lived and therefore unnecessary. However this is all part of the fun. They are a remarkable time capsule. We cannot be disappointed when they are built out; they simply www.caarc.co.nz become a secret of our city.

5OUTDOOR PRESENTATION TOP TIPS FOR

First impressions of a home begin long before you step in the front door. Cindy-Lee Sinclair from Harcourts Holmwood shares her top five tips on outdoor presentation to bring out the best in your home.

1 2 3 4 5

A tidy garden – Ensure your garden is tidy and free from weeds. Add extra colour with bright annuals in the garden, or in pots and hanging baskets. Gate, letterbox and front door – Make the entrance of your home something to remember. Update your letterbox or paint your gate and front door for a cheap and effective first impression. Street numbers can be a feature in their own right – make them over sized, coloured or steel, and even illuminated. Outdoor furniture setting – Create an outdoor living space with great outdoor furniture. Borrow from friends or hire an outdoor table and seating to complement your interior design. Outdoor furnishings – Complete your outdoor space with the addition of cushions, rugs, a great table setting, umbrellas, oversized candles and a portable outdoor fireplace. The options are endless and they are all items you can take with you to your new home. Garden lighting – Your home needs to look as welcoming in the evening as during the day. Talk to your electrician about adding lighting along pathways, to the front door and outdoor entertaining area, or keep it simple with fairy lights and solar spotlights.

Check out and 'like' Cindy-Lee's Facebook page for regular chances to win, pick up her personal blue book from the stand at Merivale Mall, or give her a call on 0274 888 616 to talk over your property needs.

Encaustic style tile revival

Encaustic tiles are also referred to as Moroccan tiles, Spanish tiles, Moorish tiles, cement tiles, inlaid tiles and geometric tiles. They were originally handmade ceramic tiles with ornate and geometric patterns that were produced within the body of the tile. Over time, as the tile became worn, the pattern remained.

T

hey date back as far as the 13th century, originally adorning churches and later gaining popularity in the homes of the wealthy Victorians in the 19th Century. They were also popular at this time throughout the USA and Latin America before spreading to the Caribbean and throughout the world. We often look to the past to inspire the designs of the present and future. Since 2014 there has been a massive resurgence in the popularity of encaustic style tiles, largely attributed to their innate and timeless beauty, energy and character. Combine these factors with contemporary design and manufacturing processes and it's not hard to see how these stunning tiles have had such a massive revival.

Whilst you can still get authentic, handmade encaustic tiles, numerous tile manufacturers are now producing encaustic-style tiles in porcelain. This enables an old world, classic design to

meet the contemporary era with superior wear, durability, application and affordability. They retain the character and charm of the original encaustic tiles, but with a more refined finish and

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING AVAILABLE FOR ALL

By Cheryl Colley

“You can do so much better than build to the Code Minimum Standard of the New Zealand Building Code,” says Andrei Martin of LiteGreen Projects. “Did you know that homes built to the current Building Code are the worst houses you can legally build in New Zealand?”

T

hat is why LiteGreen was formed in the first place, out of simple frustration at seeing hundreds of “Code-Minimum” houses delivered every year, when by blending the right mix of technology, building processes and systems, new building materials and the integration of sustainable design principles, infinitely better homes can be delivered, often with little or no extra cost. ”We want to change people's perception of what a good home should be and we are building homes now that can save people 85% of the life costs of their house. We simply stopped to see how we could do this better, asking ourselves just because we have been building this way for decades does it mean its

right for us now and the answer was no. To help demonstrate this we are soon to start building a concept house that will show just what is possible. The house will be self-sufficient, warm, dry and healthy – well above the minimum code and built at a fraction of the time of a conventional build, all showcasing that sustainable building is available for everyone.” LiteGreen have their own team of experienced builders, project managers and quality design professionals all passionate about taking standard construction to a whole new level. You can contact LiteGreen by email info@litegreen.co.nz. You can follow progress of the LiteGreen Concept House on their very informative website at www.litegreen.co.nz.

1980s TV cult classic Knight Rider captured the hearts and minds of a generation - The Hoff and his talking Trans Am KITT using futuristic technology to solve crime all with the flick of a wrist.

N

ow Volvo and Microsoft have joined forces to bring this science fiction concept to reality with their new wearable voice control system. Volvo owners will be able to talk to their car via a Microsoft Band 2 worn on their wrist, allowing them to remotely instruct their vehicle to perform tasks including, setting the navigation, starting the heater, locking the doors, flashing the lights or sounding the horn via a mobile app and the connected wearable device. Volvo national manager Coby Duggan

says this new innovation shows the company's commitment to making the driving experience as convenient as possible for its customers. “While activating your car from your wrist was an early TV predecessor to today's wearable tech, bringing it to life in 2016 is just the beginning of what is possible with digital assistant functionalities.” Duggan says more recently Volvo has begun to focus closely on innovations outside the traditional automotive arena, opening up potential partnerships and new

business models. Executive Vice President of business development at Microsoft Peggy Johnson says the Volvo partnership continues to bring ground breaking technology to enhance the automotive experience. "Together with Volvo, we're just beginning to understand the potential that technology has to improve driver safety and productivity,” she says. The Microsoft Band 2 connection will be available to New Zealand customers in the Volvo On Call mobile app in 2018.

Mitsubishi launch

Pajero Sport The Mitsubishi Pajero is pretty much the tuatara of the vehicle world — at a certain point, many, many years ago, both decided that they had had enough of this whole evolution business and simply decided to stick with what they had.

T

hough this approach may work for a lizard that spends most of its time looking like a rock, it works less well for a motor vehicle and progress insists that we must have shiny new things, so the mighty Pajero will eventually be replaced in 2018. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi has done a Land Rover and cheekily slid a new, far more modern vehicle under the Pajero name by introducing the Pajero Sport. The Pajero Sport comes to New Zealand in two forms, both powered by the Triton's 135kW/437Nm 2.4-litre diesel four-cylinder engine that is hooked up to an all-new 8speed transmission. The XLS kicks off the range at $58,990

and comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, privacy glass, daytime running lights, climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors and Mitsubishi's new Smartphone Link Display Audio system that includes

Quality European Cars

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is controlled via a 7-inch touchscreen. The VRX tops the range at $63,990 and adds 18-inch machine finish alloy wheels, LED headlights, DRLs and taillights, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, a premium 8-speaker audio system, dual zone climate control, a reversing camera, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, an ultrasonic mis-acceleration prevention system, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers. A seven-seat version of the Pajero Sport is expected to arrive in New Zealand later in 2016 and will ask a $2,000 premium on both the XLS and VRX models.

V8 Touring Cars Championships Mike Pero Motorsport Park recently hosted the V8 Touring Cars for a weekend of throttle filled motor vehicle acceleration. The weather had decided not to play fair unfortunately but it made for a valiant adventure for those who braved the embankment…

I

was fortunate enough to be invited by the SMEG team to hang out in their corporate hosting area or the pits. What got me was the commitment everyone shows when participating in racing. I sat down with Simon Evans for a chat. Simon has just come off the Australian development series as the best rookie in eight years and he's at the top of the game when it comes to V8 racing. We talked about the weather and how strategy affected his driving would be in wet weather where every lap was different: braking, the line you take and tyres can all make or break a race, especially in the wet, with one wrong decision. With a top speed of 270 kilometres per hour, and average of 150km, the wet weather was a big challenge. I have been in a 720 degree spin at 150km on that track and it's not fun. The pressure of a race and proximity of other cars must be

Simon and Owen Evans massive but Simon was as cool as a cucumber about it. “Team, it's all about the team,” he stressed. The more we talked the more I found out that everyone there has a job to do and without them Simon wouldn't be the driver he is. I watched as they balanced the weight of the car, each person checking and double checking measurements while

Simon had a sleep, they have to weigh the car with him in it. Another thing I noticed about the SMEG team is how they looked after their supporters. Owen Evans, the current New Zealand land speed record holder and team leader, gave everybody who wanted to listen a really good run down on the Holden and what had to happen to get Simon on the track. Everyone was allowed autographs and caps and as a fan, being cared about is a pretty special feeling. The track was drenched and the

logistics on tyre changes and the strategy of doing them fell on Simon. Each tyre costs $450 and can only be used for 140 kilometres. The tool you need the most in the pits? A big bank balance! The team is lucky to have the backing of SMEG. Simon came second that day but he's still holding on to ďŹ rst place with 766 points in the series. Walking through the pits in the rain, there was the sound of thunder and the battle of Holden Vs Ford continued. Motor racing at its best!
